Zaheer fitness remains a concern ahead of first test

The spearhead of the Indian bowling attack, Zaheer Khan opted to not go through a full practice session with the Indian squad, raising concerns about his injury. Zaheer only went through fitness drills with Paul Chapman, the team physio while the rest of the Indian team were going through their first full practice session in South Africa.

Reportedly, the move was to ensure that Zaheer does not aggravate the injury as scans failed to pin point what the problem was.

A team source said “As of now he is not [fit], there are still three days to go to the Test, so we didn’t want to take any risks.” The Indian team was seen at the Supersport Park in Centurion, but Zaheer was going through light fitness drills with Chapman and was often holding on to the groin area.

The injury could be a result of Zaheer suffering a niggle in the 4th ODI against New Zealand at Bangalore. Zaheer was seen holding on to the groin area after bowling the 49th over.

Zaheer had missed the third Test and the first two ODIs against New Zealand with a groin injury. He also didn’t play in the fifth ODI in Chennai.

Zaheer has missed out on quite a lot of cricket this year due to injuries. He missed the tour of Sri Lanka with a shoulder injury. He played some T20 cricket in the Champions League Twenty20 following that up with a good performance in the Tests against the Aussies, but got injured again.

India have Umesh Yadav and Jaydev Unadkat to choose from in case Zaheer is ruled out with injury.

India vs South Africa: Series Preview

One of the awaited Test series is about to begin in couple of days with India proving themselves at the home ground by winning two series back-to-back, first against Australia and then against New Zealand. It will be the real testing time for the India team as they are coming up against the No. 2 ranked test team. South Africa too have been in tremenedous form with some fine series against Pakistan in UAE. This series will truely define the real champion of the game.

India have not been able to win a series against South Africa in South Africa so far and this will be the challenging task for them. Team India has performed in all odds in past one year to prove their credentials but to win a series in South Africa will definitely boost up team confidence ahead of the World Cup. In an interview, Gary Kirsten sais “We dont need to justify our no. 1 spot” but also that the “Test series [against South Africa] will be a defining moment” for the team. He said this team, if it won the series, could well become the greatest Test side to come out of the country.

This series is not only important for team India but for individual players as well. Gautam Gambhir has returned to form during the New Zealand series but does that mean he will be able to perform against the bounce of SA pitches? Morne Morkel picked him twice in the ODI when SA toured India earlier in the year. This will be the testing time for Gambhir techniques to fight against the bounce produced by proteas bowlers.

Rahul Dravid doesn’t looks to be in the very best of the forms but he manages to help India in someway or the other but will that be enough? This is time when “The WALL” can prove his worth again and give India a boost in the batting line-up.

VVS Laxman a true saviour for the Indian team. He has saved Indian team at the most crucial times when all the top batsman are gone and he alone saved the game for the team. According to the stats he hasn’t scored a century in South Africa but looking to his form in recent times it looks like the long drought will finally come to end.

Suresh Raina, is performing good but the short balls and bouncy tracks has been the areas of worry for him. Raina has practiced to get overpast those issue and this time he has to show his real worth. Raina is one all-rounder that India would definitely like to have but at the same time he needs to provide result as well.

The bowling department has to seriously work really hard if India are looking to win the series. Bowling trio Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth are the one’s that will be used by India in 1st Test. Zaheer undoubtedly performing the best among them but injury concerns over him is the major problem for Indian team. Eric Simmon, bowling coach, really has to work very hard on the boys to get the rhythm right against the proteas. Bowling is one area where Indian team definitely needs a big improvement and this will be real test for them before the World Cup.

This Indian team is the most confident Indian side who knows how to tackle the situation in all odds. They know a lot can go wrong, but they also know a lot can go right. They know they are good as a unit and it will be very challenging for the South African’s to beat them. They have come up with wonderful home season and win here will just start a new beginning for them ahead of the World Cup. They are working hard and making the very effort to bring the best out of themselves. The Indian team, however, evident at least from what Kirsten said, is not thinking about how to not lose, but how to win. We are ready to handle Short-pitch balls: Dhoni

India skipper MS Dhoni is confident that his team is in good form and past experience of playing in the IPL and Champions League in South African conditions will hold the team in good stead during the three-match Test series against the Proteas.

“It will be important for us to adapt to the conditions. Yet I believe we will be better prepared than before, because the guys have played here in the IPL and in the Champions League and it is not that foreign to them,” Dhoni said. “The most important thing is to remain focused and well prepared for what awaits us,” the India skipper added.

Responding to host’s threats of preparing fast and bouncy tracks Dhoni said, “We are so used to that question — about how we will handle it when we are bombarded with short-balls.”

“The answer is that it will not bother us. Most of our batsmen have recently played quite a lot in South Africa and are much more familiar with conditions than was the case in the past,” Dhoni added.

The Indian captain, however, believed that the South African fast bowlers are at the moment focusing on the short-pitch stuff to unsettle his team.

“It is not something, which we are not expecting. It is after all how South Africa has achieved success against us in the past,” he said.

Dhoni said his team is in good form and are not thinking about past record in South Africa. “We do not pay attention to what history says about what happened here in the past. We do not think too much about the statistics,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni was all praise for coach Gary Kirsten and said his knowledge of the local conditions will certainly come in handy. “Gary Kirsten is the best thing that could have happened to Indian cricket. He not only knows our players but also understands the mindset of the South Africans and that insight will be important,” he said.

Players to earn less under new IPL contract

The new IPL player’s contract has several sections that will be inexpedient to the cricketers and the take-home pay of those who sign it could be reduced to as little as 50 per cent of the signing amount, a report said today.

A report in `Sunday Star Times said the player agreement of this season differs substantially from that in the first three years and New Zealand`s leading cricketers could earn just 50 per cent of what they sell for at the auction likely to be held in February.

New Zealand Cricket Player’s Association boss Heath Mills has reviewed a draft version of the playing agreement and raised a number of concerns with the Kiwi players who have put their names forward.

The two-page document stipulates that if the players are bought by big-spending franchises at the auction, they will be committed to signing a playing agreement for the next three years.

In the original contract, players received the majority of their fee they have been bought at, whether they played or not as long as they were available for their franchises.

Kyle Mills, who signed for USD 150,000 with Mumbai Indians in late 2008, was paid close to the full amount when available despite not being selected in the final XI and rolling the arm over just once, the newspaper said.

In the new contract, according to the newspaper, 20 per cent of a player`s salary will be withheld and paid only if his team is one of the three that qualify for the Champions League from the Indian competition.

A promotions clause stipulates that a further 10 per cent is at risk if the player is unable to fulfill any promotional requirements.

Potentially, a player consistently left out of his franchise`s playing XI, which also fails to qualify for the Champions League, and who is unavailable for promotional work, will make just over half what he sold for at auction.

“We can`t control the process or influence how the IPL chooses to deal with these matters but it`s important players know by signing the auction agreement they are committing that it binds them for three years if they are picked up in the auction. The guys need to be aware of what they are committing to,” Mills was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Mills said some Kiwi players had put a lot of thought into setting their reserve for the auction given the changes from the original IPL contracts and potential reduction of earnings for reasons outside their control.

Players have the option of setting a reserve for their services from as little as USD 20,000 or up to USD 400,000.

Players had until Friday to signal their interest in playing in the next three IPL seasons by signing an auction agreement.
